We’re very excited to announce the launch of our brand-new Actual Play series in conjunction with Baboon Animation, set in the screwball cyberpunk world of Something’s Awry Productions’ latest animated series, Drive! Cal Gal Drive! It’s an immersive dive into our show’s universe, featuring a stellar cast of anime voice actors you know and love.

What’s an Actual Play?

If you’re new to the concept, an Actual Play is a series or podcast where a group of players (often voice actors, comedians, etc.) play a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) while being recorded for viewers to enjoy. Actual Plays have become incredibly popular, blending the excitement of live, improvised storytelling with the depth and immersion of a well-crafted game world. Shows like Critical Role and Dimension 20 have brought TTRPGs into the mainstream, captivating audiences with their unique mix of drama, humor, and creativity.

Improvisation is Key

The unpredictable nature of tabletop role-playing games means that no one, not even our Game Master, knows exactly how the story will unfold. Unlike a scripted show, a TTRPG Actual Play requires the actors to think on their feet, responding to unexpected twists and turns in real-time. As a result, they have to continuously adapt, coming up with clever solutions, witty dialogue, and sometimes even making bold decisions that can change the course of the entire adventure. It’s this element of surprise and creativity that makes an Actual Play series so engaging— you never know what’s going to happen next!

Meet the Voice Talent Bringing This World to Life

We’ve assembled an incredible lineup of voice actors to join us on this adventure:

  • Yong Yea: You might recognize Yong from his performance as Lance Slashblade in Inside Out 2 or as Kiryu in Like a Dragon. In our world he plays Sliver, an action star who moonlights as a crowd-sourced fixer in order to search for his missing brother.
  • Ryan Colt Levy: Known for his roles in Chainsaw Man (Denji) and My Hero Academia (Rody Soul), Ryan’s dynamic voice lends itself well to his character of Chase Chancellor, a washed-up boy band star trying to raise money for an injured bandmate.
  • Alejandra Reynoso: Alejandra, famous for her role as Sypha Belnades in Castlevania and as the voice of protagonist Liko in Pokémon Horizons, brings heart and hijinks to her character Liv: a hacker trying to put her genius kid sister through Stanford Kids, the best middle school in NeoCalifornia.
  • Paul Castro, Jr.: Bringing a wealth of experience from roles in Honkai Star Rail and Genshin Impact, Paul’s unique sense of humor perfectly compliments his character Wreck, a spoiled rich kid desperately seeking one million subscribers.

What’s the Game?

We play a modified version of CBR+PNK, a fast-paced, cinematic tabletop RPG that fits seamlessly with the high-speed, high-stakes world of Drive! Cal Gal Drive! Expect daring heists, vehicular combat, and automobile flirtation as our cast navigates the mad world of NeoCalifornia.

Meet the Game Master

Guiding our players through this adrenaline-pumping journey is Something’s Awry’s very own Kurtis Theorin. With his deep understanding of the world and years of experience running TTRPGS, Kurtis has a knack for storytelling and character development that keeps both our players and viewers on the edge of their seats.
